we have no doubt that you'll win alastago

activity: number of post with relation of time spent online

wish we have a count on the IRC or the shout box that would expose active members even more
An IRC activity bot is possible, I've used those before.  You could get results like this: http://stats.synirc.net/channel/ed-chat/  I could install one, since i already have the gamehall bot up, but such channel stats are usually niche and pretty useless :p

For the shoutbox..not as much, but for that selroth or someone else could probably write a small program to parse the chat log(though I don't know how deep that log goes).

Your code gave odd numbers and such.  I didn't like DateDiff seem to be behaving, and figured to use your code to just give the average birth year.

Uh, datadiff makes difference in days... I've consulted the latest mysql documetation for that.
It worked right with me, the only thing was that it also added the decimal part... but, more precise, more cool, no?

Though you could just make the difference of both year() of the two fields (now() and birthday).
My concerns were on the poster_time field, cause it wasn't clear what kind of timestamp it was (for example, some funny systems, like MS's, use decisecs or centisecs -.-)

But, i couldn't do deep tests, cause the smf I've installed has nearly empty tables... so not sure how data is supposed to came out.

The male to female ratio of users active in the past six months and/or/year?

Activity, as defined by summed post length (so I can re-use code =P), within the last year:

Code: [Select]
SELECT t.name, SUM( t.myCount ) AS total_count
FROM (
SELECT poster_name AS name, LENGTH( body ) AS myCount
FROM smf_messages
WHERE poster_time > 1270597987
)t

GROUP BY t.name
ORDER BY total_count DESC
LIMIT 0, 20

Male to Female Ratio of users active in the past year:
Code: [Select]
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM smf_members
WHERE gender = 2 AND last_login > 1270597987
gender=2 is female.  Running the code for gender = 1 is male.
31 females
130 males

When I was going trough the members tab, and clicking around, I found some profiles with 0 posts.
It could be interesting, as for knowing the number of the ongoing community, to know how much of those are. Or in the contrary, the subtraction of that number from the total.
Or even the total of last active users in like, 2 or 3 years. Or even one. It had been already considered the active in last year scenario, but only in age counting, while what I'm suggesting here is to know how much people are actually alive.

This also gave me another idea, but not really related to this post.

Yeah we actually clear out the member list every so often to remove accounts with 0 posts. Its tricky though because new members may not have posted yet and we obviously don't want to remove them! Hehe.
