Games Threads
« on: October 04, 2010, 09:12:58 PM »

Yes, it's that dreaded discussion again about games threads.  No matter how many times we discuss them, and how many times we remove them, they still crop up again.  So I'm asking point blank, what do you guys want to happen?  I'll take the replies from here and tally them into votes (so that I get constructive answers and not just a click of a button in a poll...that may not show all possible solutions).

Here are some options I think are plausible (in no particular order):

* We could remove all games threads and make it clear that no games threads are allowed at all.  The down side to this is the fact it's making a rule on a forum where we try to make it rule-free, so you all get freedom here.  The upside is not being over-run with games threads.

* We could remove all games threads except for 2 (one "silly" and one "thinky"?) which is how it's been for quite a while anyway.  The downside is people will keep adding new games threads, as we know, and killing them all off seems a bit unfair.  The upside is not being over-run with games threads.  This would be a hard one to moderate.

* We could have a sub-forum specifically for games (strictly no RP) and stop post count contributing towards people's totals.  Upside is having the games away from the general forums.  Downside is it could change the tone of the forums in general.

There is always the possibility with the 3rd option of making that sub-forum hidden and having it as a seperate membergroup, which makes the games one step further away from the general forums again.  Not sure I like the idea of having all of these hidden forums popping up all over the place though.

Thoughts?  Ideas?  What do you guys want? :)

the 3rd idea seems good. another forum i belong to has a similar forum just for pointless things, where it... isn't supposed to increase your post count, but it does because of a glitch from a few months ago that the admins never fixed LOL.

and i think that'd be good for here, too. forget the tone of the place, it won't change because of one board ^^' and i don't think we need to make it hidden.

I agree with the third idea, it would clean things up a abit, and make it easier to get to games.

Third option seems the best.  I would actually argue there are a number of other high-traffic topics (how do you feel, what are you listening to, etc.) that could be moved there as well, given they're more like the game threads than an actual forum discussion.

I think we should do what gulf coast furs did. Just take RP and games and group em into one. I know Roc wanted them quite badly :P

This is not an RP site, we won't have RP threads here.

I'm taking it from your answer xeno that you're also saying option 3 that I listed.

Something that maybe may not collide with the forum existence itself.
Like, for example, make certain topics being flagged, so that they don't increment post count, or they don't trigger the 'read new', because generally those topics are always active. Maybe an ignore topic feature?

Personally i see games to be quite silly, but that's just my opinion. But since it sems that many users like those games (at least i see a continous posting about them), maybe a different solution, like #3 could be applied.
I also consider the other two kinds of post to be quite the same of games, under a certain point of view. And those may suggest an enhancement too like: a personal message like used in messengers. There is already a personal message i see, so maybe just a quicker way to modify it from the horizontal panel above? Like, AJAX-ing the change.

So, #3, just with some tech addings, i would say.

I vote for number 3.
I saw another forum like this one and it had another sub-forum for games, so I know how it is.

Number 3 sounds good, though I'm still kinda disappointed at the no RP at all in any way, anywhere policy, though I guess it's possible to get over by means of another site... Though I can't see myself leave this corner of the Internet, not of my own will.

I like option three but do not like the idea of stopping the posts in game threads from counting. With the amount of spam and off-topic posting that goes on in some threads and the varying quality of posts from member to member from time to time, it is already pretty well established that the post count is just a fun statistic to have counted off on the side... so I am not sure why posts in some threads would need be taken more seriously than others. Hehehe.

Because like it or not, some people do attribute post count to credibility, wisdom, or any other damn thing.  If people feel that strongly about it, we could split the post counts or remove them altogether.  Me, I don't care.
