If you make it a hidden-by-default board, then the members without access to it will be posting topics that really belong there in other parts of the forum, rendering the whole thing kinda pointless.

As other people have said, nobody is being forced to read topics in the heated board and if you're unable to control your feelings towards posts that really isn't the forum staff's problem.

I had wondered about that either, having it opt-out instead of opt-in.  Might work better that way.

All threads and discussion areas are already "opt-out."  If you don't like something, don't read it.  Plain and simple.  If some one has a particular poster who drives them particularly buggy, they can use the "Ignore this User" function and all of said irritant's posts will be blocked unless they deliberately choose to view them.

No matter what y'all do with the forum or how it is laid out there will always be someone who can find something to bitch about.  People who just can't help themselves but to read topics in the heated discussion areas that they *know* damn good and well will piss them off have no one to blame but themselves when they (SHOCK) find something that pisses them off.  They will deliberately choose to read posts by those they consider trolls because they are, themselves,  addicted to the very same drama they bitch and complain about.

I very rarely read anything posted in the heated discussion area because 95% of the time the topics are bullshit anyway.  And the few that are not after the first couple of pages degenerate into bullshit.  So I use my grown-up decision making abilities and choose to "opt-out" all on my own from reading topics that I know are just going to irritate me.  And I further use my own grown-up decision making abilities to ignore those members whose views

1) I am vehemently  opposed to,
2) whom I consider to be little more than trolls, or
3) who for what ever reason simply drive me buggy.

So many people get pissed off when treated or talked to like a child... even when technically they are... but then turn around and whine and cry to mommy and daddy (I.E. Admin) like a spoiled child when they find themselves getting punked in a heated discussion they voluntarily jumped into the middle of.

Well, if you can't take the heat don't poke the flippin' dragon!  And don't poke around in the heated discussion areas!

Still keeping an eye on votes but in the interim I have adjusted the text of Heated's subtitle and also added a new introduction post to that section as a whole.  Can be viewed here: http://www.draconity.org/index.php/topic,6218.0.html
