Heated Forum?
« on: October 02, 2010, 08:11:04 PM »

As Sel and I are talking about forum stuff I've brought up about Heated.  It is the only no-moderation forum (with the exception of anything illegal) but we do still get people complain about threads in there instead of walking away, or ignoring/not replying to inflammatory posts, etc.

Sel has brought up the possibility of making Heated a separate membergroup so that it's hidden from the forums by default and you opt-in to be able to see and/or take part in the no-moderation topics.  It could be a good idea so that it quarantines any drama or aggravated topics.  Alternatively we could leave it visible to all and make it clearer that it is no-moderation in there (we will make that clearer either way though) so that people have the option of taking part without having to join another membergroup (which they may not be aware of).

So, I figured we should see what you guys would prefer :)  Thoughts?  Comments?  Ideas?

methinks we should do both! first make a post explaining that the heated section is what it is, then sticky it in the heated section. you could title it "READ THIS BEFORE YOU POST OR READ". then when people ignore it you could make it a group that everyone is already part of by default, and if they dont like it they can turn it off?

I had wondered about that either, having it opt-out instead of opt-in.  Might work better that way.

I like the idea you guys have. Heated place for those who wish to go, who choose to go, who know the conditions of going. Otherwise people just get hurt without not knowing the risks.

I already discussed this with you, but I'll put it on here.

I put no. We don't need to make all these groups to shelter people. If someone chooses not to be apart of the discussion, they can do so. They are perfectly capable of doing it themselves. If you don't like broccoli, you don't have to eat it, you don't have to put a napkin over it to hide it (XP). We don't need to be babied.

Not every post in the Heated is hateful either. I think it is fine the way it is... Maybe, as draco suggested, a big "READ BEFORE YOU POST" or something. There can't be a solution for everything, somethings just have to stay the way they are.

people aren't forced to look in there; if they don't want to look at it, don't make the mods/admins/whatever we have here, do more work.

to be a bit blunt, the solutions posted here are just overcomplicated versions of just not clicking on the board name.

Members are curious, either way they will have the options to read and reply to threads. What really would be the difference?
Making it a membergroup is kinda like telling a kid "no", they are going to be curious about why they were told no.

They already have the option to look at the 'heated section' or ignore it. Nobody is directing their mouse to make them look at the section.

I vote for just option two, to make it clearer that it is an unmoderated places. I too was unaware of that for a long time.. I think it should suffice, those that still whine over just heated discussions in there(excepting the very offensive things), should just have to deal with it, heh :3

I think I love you.  Lol!

The replies all seem to be saying the same thing so far, even if the votes are a bit split right now.  I'll give the thread a few days at least so that we get as much feedback as possible before deciding on it.

I voted no.  Getting upset over a topic in an unmoderated, voluntary forum is like getting upset at spoons for making you eat food you don't like.  The forum is sitting there doing jack-shit.  People make the conscious decision to click on the forum.  They then click on a topic.  They then post in said topic.  Rather than getting upset because they were contradicted/flamed/whatever... don't click on the gorram forum.

Way I see it, so long as the board is properly marked as unmoderated and voluntary-participation, anybody getting upset is either ignorant as hell, butthurt, or trolling.  The three are not mutually exclusive to each other.

Voted no.
Wasn't the original idea of innovation to have a forum where to put everything?
I mean, i think it could be useful too, IMHO, to 'settle' things.

Plus, not wanting to see something is a quite common behavior, that happens in life too... and i think is bad, when someone just want to not face things.

Not only that - but what actually harm had it brought, till now? Did you have some report from users?

A direct and mutually accessible forum supports a community of oneness. To have those who definitively are or are not participants of any part of the forum sparks unnecessary segregation.  I say no.

I voted "Don't Care" because I'm not sure what to think about the idea. Myself, I perhaps just peek in at new topics, but if they go out of hand (and they likely will), I stay away from them. It's that simple after all.
