Signatures and Avatars
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:44:17 PM »

How much is too much?

I'm not writing any rules, but I would like to discuss the avatars and signatures on the forums.  If people have any concerns about them, voice them out here - as some people may not even be aware that there's a problem at all.

Personally, I have a 28.5" widescreen at 1920x1200, and I find it kinda sad when I go to the site and 90% of my screen are "click me" animated dragons and maybe 1 or 2 lines of plain text squeezed in between.  In fact, I tend to skip over those posts.

Agreed.

I have always thought there should be a size limit, especially on sig graphics.  Not just in over all file size, but pixel dimensions.  And the size limit should be in total not per image.  25-30K isn't bad for a single image, even 50-60K could be alright for people with broadband, but where there are 5-6 or MORE of them in a single signature?  It's ridiculous, and to be honest it looks sloppy.  Even more so when a single line reply post takes up 6 inches of screen height because of the absurd number and/or size of graphics.

The dragon animated things are already being taken care of, it's my fault they're not moved already because I haven't got around to setting up the thing that the dragon adopters agreed would be a good idea (instead of signatures).

Bad Aure!

Remind me later on Friday and I'll sort it, or if not I'll get it done as soon as I get back to Italy.  Sorry guys!

I found those stupid 'click me' dragons in people's signatures VERY annoying myself. I don't find them cute and seeing the same stupid images over and over and over again in posts is very annoying. It's gotten to the point I actually configured my adblockplus module to hide any images from those two websites to get rid of them. -.-

I removed my DA pics. I only put them on when the topic about them originally popped up a while back.

Well, I have no problems with such things at all. But I can respect that others are enraged by them, as they do take up space. But I'm not sure about what to have in my signature instead. Although, I just got an idea.

As I've said: Not troubled at all, frankly.

I don't have a problem with avatars so much as with animated signature lines.  When a post is one line long and the signature takes up the rest of my screen (I'm on a laptop with a 14.5" wide screen) that does take up a bit too much space, and irritates me a bit.

My trouble pretty much lies with signatures, though some avatars can be annoying.  Yes, the dragons are cute, yadda yadda.  I think they need their own thread somewhere.  Or link to your account (or whatever) in your signature.  It's the same problem I had with the animated topic icons: they're too large, way too silly for the atmosphere of the forum, and extremely annoying.  Heck, I can't stand florescent lights and flickering monitors in my peripheral vision, either.

Yes, I consider the lots-of-graphics-sigs to be annoying. This is why over at DR, we have put a limit on the vertical size of a signature - to keep sigs from being longer than the posts :)

This is a general thing - moving images draw attention. This is of course very troublesome if you're trying to read text elsewhere on a page.

maybe we should just put up the restrictions every other site has :3 mine goes by those (i copypasted from other forum i went to) only one pic (no more than 500px wide, 200 tall) no links, 250 chars, etc.

Could put links, but only non-interactive links meaning no <ahref> tags, just appear as plain text so it doesn't become a lick war, though would also need to limit amount of new lines as well so that someone doesn't spam tons of tinyurls.. ie.

http://blah.tinyurl
http://blah2.tinyurl
http://blah3.tinyrul
etc.

*Edit* I'd also like to add that things like SillyDraco's avatar and banner are perfectly fine with me. They're animated, but small and in appropriate places as well as simple pattern so they aren't distracting, might steal a glance for a couple seconds then can easily ignore them because it's not a huge complex animation nor is the animation in any way in your face. I rather like them too. It's just things like having multiple animated images side-by-side (particularly if they have different animation lengths) or are large and waste lots of space. If everyone kept to a format like SillyDraco's I'd be content. Those dragonadopters are annoying because it's often several animations, they change (because after x clicks it's a new image), and they all have a different animation and all are different colours and shapes, it's just visual overkill against trying to read text on the forum. It's even worse when people with those things post after each other as the page is dominated more by those stupid pictures than text!

Cool.

Well, so far we don't really have any written rules so I'm not going to make any.  Besides, I think topics like this, that make people aware of them, are far more effective than "rules".  Rules are entirely too static, and without exception.  I hate "rules" and I truly believe a community can be managed very effectively without writing any rules down.

They don't bother me too much, because I don't have signatures enabled. (or avatars)

I can understand them being a bit annoying though.

Now that I see that people are getting pissed, I think I shall change my signature totally right now. You know, I don't wanna have my posts ignored just because of my signature. I hope my little avatar can stay though...

As someone who listens to classical music, I disagree with your signature and therefore will ignore you because of it. :P

Kidding, but I don't think anyone will ignore someone's post completely due to their signature.
