Serious vs Silly
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:45:32 AM »

Please keep brainstorming and contributing to the pro's and con's list below.  This is a core decision that affects everything in the site (not just a games thread), so I'd like people to be sure about this.

Pro-Serious:
-People have a better chance of discovering something about themselves - otherkin and spirituality topics would be of higher quality.
-Length of posts would increase, as would wording/spelling perhaps.
-Friendships on the forum would be stronger, as there would be improved communication and stronger ideals shared.
-Projects and Activities would grow as people take a more serious commitment to these.
-Members would display more maturity, the ones looking to be silly or immature wouldn't have a lot of fuel.
-The site would probably become less embarrassing for a friend or relative to stumble upon.
-Could still have a small section or two for light-hearted stuff.

Pro-Silly:
-The forum takes less time of your day and easier to check and participate in.
-You make more friends quicker
-The forum is more fun and lighthearted
-Less hurt feelings from having a serious disagreement
-We'd likely have a larger member count.
-The site would be more welcoming to young members or member new to their draconity.
-Could still have a small section or two for serious stuff.  (*cough* Rashan's *cough*)

I said Pro-Serious, but I want to elaborate on it a bit:

I've got no problems if the games go, however, as Aurelia said, the Riddles thread isn't really a game, so as long as it stays I'll be happy.

Also, I feel that while a generally serious approach is good, in some topics (especially in multimedia and entertainment related topics), it is forgivable to go a tad "silly".

The riddles thread I think is a "serious" game, so that's perfectly fine.  I don't find it too silly.
You can also kinda see things are "mature" vs "childish".  But then you could also see it as "boring" vs "fun"

Of course, it'd be OK to have a bit of everything.  I'm trying to address the /main/ thing about the site, and how much of it we should have.  The main thing could definitely affect even the overall appearance/theme of the site.

I would want it to be Pro-Serious. I don't really want this site to be overly silly and with little point. I always saw this site as more of a helpful and mature site. Of course there are moments of silliness but that can't be helped. I don't know what else to back up my reason on Pro-Serious.

Well, I'm actually indifferent. I don't care. Just as long as the forums don't die, I'm happy.

I would prefer a hybrid of the two. While I enjoy serious discussions, people also ought to be able to loosen up a bit and mess around. How this will impact the forum I'm not sure, but despite all the serious posts I prefer to be silly. '>.=.>'

I would also prefer both, but slightly leaning towards silly. serious.

I couldn't really like a forum that's just specifically one or the other.

EDIT: I hate typos. ;_;

*giggles* believe it or not i said serious  i think if we made it all silly the forum would become watered down and nobody would really discuss anything, and personally i dun like all the "comment the person above you" or "counting thread" and such. it seems like a waste of time with no real contributing factors. having said that, i wouldnt mind seeing people more comfortable when they post, being able to "talk" in their own tone / lingo / style etc, as long as their grammar doesnt 1O0k 1ik3 Th12 or have horrible speillng problems.

Just to clarify though, when I say silly I don't mean as in making serious discussions silly. If we're talking about a single attitude towards all threads I'd go with serious for the sake of not making intelligent conversations ridiculous and irrational. It's good to have fun, but there's a time and place for everything. :P

Well, a bit more silly, but yet serious discussions would be great. Mostly indifferent from me though.

Thanks for the input guys, it's valuable!  And we (admins) are listening!

However, no one's added anymore pros or cons.  I couldn't have got them all :)

I voted Neither/Either/Don't Care, because I think it should be a place where we can be silly and serious at the same time.

Honestly, though, I hope it doesn't go all silly, because I do come here for serious reasons, not the least of which is the furtherance of my spirituality.  Still, I think a game or two is okay.

So for me, it should be a little silly and a larger amount serious.

Blessed Be.

I want Pro-Serious, that's why I came here is everyone takes what I say seriously and keep an open mind. Finding silly places is easy, finding a place where someone will take you seriously and actually give real thought to things you say and ask means a lot to me which is why this is the only dragonkin forum I go to anymore. 'Silly' forums everyone just wants to make cheap jokes and it quickly ends up a game to people where there's more role players and such than real people that seriously believe they're dragons, ergo actual dragonkin. I don't want serious awakening topics becoming a game to people. There's a time and place for serious and silly, but the majority of this site should be serious. We can make a silly section if we want but talking about things like one's deepest parts of themselves, their beliefs and their sensitive awakening is important for people to take seriously as to not upset someone and help them through the awakening, not confuse them farther.

This is a site originally based on a serious subject. Draconity can be joked about, but it itself isn't a joke. I say serious, but there should be a section for games and silly stuff. Plenty of other forums manage to stay on track while still having a games section. One thing we'd have to watch for is what happened to the dragonadopters forums, where I first learned about otherkin. It's flooded with spam topics like "Would you rather be a banana or a blueberry", and very little real discussion goes on, much less anything serious.

You say you want some pros and cons huh. I am unsure what other pros I can think of. But for cons I can think of some for both. I say 'Serious conversations' in this as in the category of dragonkin discussions, debates and the more serious and mature kind of topics

Con-Serious
-People may accidentally be hurt by serious conversations and may sometimes feel attacked.
-A lot of younger people may find it hard to fit in with mature conversations and older people.
-Serious conversations may not last long or be over used.
-A lot of people may not have any interest in serious conversations.
-As result of a more serious site, people coming here wont be as frequent as a silly site may get.

Con-Silly
-The site may have little help for people who want to discover themselves more.
-The site would look immature and silly. If a family member or friend (of a member of the site) did find it by stumbling on it, they would have a poor outlook on the person.
-Serious conversations (if they are made) wouldn't have much of a serious response from everyone.
-As the site been a silly one, -may- attract unwanted people such as people thinking this site as a role-play forum.
-As the site is been silly, it would be more aimed at younger people. Older people may lose interest because of the lack of serious conversations.
-As a result from Rashans, people may not care for serious conversations and just play games. Making the site lacking in discussions.

That is all I can think of. Sorry if I may have repeated one or two.
