Local 'kin notifier thingy?

A lot of you liked the member map.  A lot of you come to this website for social networking.  I'm thinking of one-upping this by a feature I just thought of.  Even though I don't know how to implement it, it cant be that hard and I'm willing to pay someone to do it for me if I can't.

Anyway, a lot of us say what country we are in when we register, or even give our location down to state/province, city, and few even get more precise than that (which I do NOT recommend doing, but I'm not gonna stop you :).  When we register on the site with this data, or update it via our profile, wouldn't it be nice if the site automatically told you who else was within x miles?  Maybe a seperate list, or you can elect for email notification or something? 

Who knows.  Maybe some one from your school or work signs up to this site and you wouldn't even know about it if it wasn't for a feature like this.  Remember, we're all real people who exist somewhere in real life, and I guarantee many of you have passed by many 'kin without even knowing it.

heh too me this sounds good to do and i dont think it will be hard to set up a codeing that does it (doubt i can sence i havent used that much codeing in a long time and didnt learn much codeing yet o.=.o )

Yeah sounds like a good feature.  From experience I know there isn't anyone near me on this site but with new members coming in all the time there may be in the future :)

I've tried looking for some add on on SMF and there doesnt seem to be this feature yet :\

You'd also have to put an extra option for other people to say "don't give notifications about my location to others" or something because some people might not want others to know they are around. (Except that just seems redundant if their location is on their profile anyway.. but it gives an extra illusion of security so it's all good :D ).

Wait I've thought of a different idea ;)  You can add a new option in "profile" that is Latitude/Longitude, then implement a code that checks whether people are within a couple degrees of each other and notifies that user if withinXdegrees=true. This would mean the system would only work when others "enable" it (put in their Longitude/Latitude) and would mean you can ignore the above thingy :P

I'd give my full support to this idea. Perhaps there should be a way to change the number of miles it notifies you in? (Drop down box with like 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 etc.)

I'd love a feature like this... as to date there's only ONE other dragonkin I know of even within my entire province!  :sad:  we're all alone up here

The map works pretty well so far.  Not that it's a notifier but it's good to see who is close by :)
