Buddy List
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:46:37 AM »

Did you know this site had a buddy list?  It's true.  Look at people's profiles and you'll see the link to add them to your buddy list.  Go into your own profile, and you'll be able to manage your buddy list.  The technology is there, but it's not very visible.

Should it be?  Should I have your buddy list show in the member bar next to the shoutbox or something?  Should I put a "Add to Buddy List" in each person's post block under their avatar or something?

Another neat thing I'm willing to try, is a feature that lets you see who has you as their buddy.  That way you can return the favor, or discover some people who kinda like you that you had no idea about :)  However, this information will be private just to you so that the site doesn't turn into a popularity contest.

Thoughts?

hmm, maybe if we could mass add buddies, you know like view the list of members and check all the ones we want and add them all at once? would be long and tedious to look through the forum for all your friends...and just about everyone here i would want to add :D

There's alot of people here I would like to add. I think it's a good idea. Maybe a system where you have a list of all the members with a check box next to their name to add them along with the option of adding them through their post box. Not sure if that last part made any sence. I'm not sure what else to call that little area below the signature line/lines.

I think a mass adding system would be good, but having add to buddies in every post would be messy and tedious. As for letting you see who has you as a buddy, I think that would be cool.

Not something I'd use so I'd rather not have a big empty box where names could be but aren't lol!  There isn't anyone on the site I don't get on with so they're all my buddies - some are close friends but I don't need a list to show me that :)

EDIT:  Just wanted to add, in case it wasn't clear, I'm not against the site having a buddy list system, nor against people using it, I'm just against it creating things (like additional boxes/bars) on the site that those who don't use the system will be stuck with anyway.

hmm, maybe have a check box in your profile config that can hide buddy stuff?

I can easily have it not show up if it's empty.  That's a simple if (!empty()) clause in PHP :)  But maybe I could have it an option in the profile too - wouldn't be too hard.

Something where members can click on other members names in the list and have the option of adding them as a buddy. Instead of having additional bars or boxes their buddies would show up a different color if added. They would then be able to see who they've added to their buddies list without having to worry about check boxes and sidebars. The option to remove someone from their buddies list would only be there if the member was already on their buddies list. But then with this there is also the increased risk of people adding then removing members resulting in some more sensitive people being hurt and possible battles over it. To minimize this there would be need to be a few rules regarding conduct of members over the buddy list.

My other thought here is having a button underneath the signature that allows users to watch other members if they want. Basically it would allow them to receive a daily newsletter of topics where their buddies have posted. The box would have a check mark over the words "Watch this user" for those said watching member was watching and no checkmark for everyone else.

That's what I've come up with after reading through everyone's replies to this topic.

Addition: Another additional color could be used so you can see who has you on their buddy list for those wanting to return the favour. I don't think there should be a mass notification system for this unless it is on a sidebar or something. Mass-mailing for notifications would get tiresome after awhile and people might forget to check their inbox, same problem with PM notifications.

Thanks for the insight!  One thing that stuck out with me and was kinda a background thought till now was the idea to see what posts/threads your buddies participated in.  Though, not necessarily anything to do with a newsletter (that's a different subject :)  Different colors and such to highlight buddies and make things more obvious are certainly a central part of what I wanna do with the buddy list.

If people are going to be allowed to see who has you as a buddy, then maybe there should also be the option to not allow others to see this as well.  Some people might like that but some might not?

I have a recomendation for the buddy list on this site. I was wondering if it would be possible to see who has added you as a buddy and who you have as a buddy? I got this idea from another site Rashans Forum where I'm also a member. Ours could be more basic like a side bar with two lists "buddies", and "people who've added you". Just a question here. I know this is an old topic but I didn't want to create another one for buddy lists since there already is a recent one.
