Draconity.org Newsletter?
« on: October 20, 2008, 06:30:57 AM »

Hey all!  Well, as most of you probably know we sent out an email a month or so ago and it boosted activity on the site like a madman!  I think such a thing could do wonders for the community.  However, at the same time, I'd hate to think of it as spam and just fill people's inboxes with.

Now, we can easily create a newletter people voluntarily subscribe too.  Problem is, would anyone sign up?  And would it at all be a problem if we just used our current mass-mailing method - I'm sure people can delete/spam-list it easily enough, and one can easily unsubscribe via their account.  Knowing that people didn't necessarily volunteer for it may force the writers to keep it to the most interesting stuff.

Or maybe, the bigger question would be, what would we put in it?  I was thinking highlight topics, contests and previous winners, news from us an sister sites, or whatever.

All and all, I just wanna email people who occasionally forget about the site or don't have time to be checking all the threads.  Yet, they may eagerly want to hear what's going on or participate in some events.  I wanna know the best way to do it.

I think it's a good idea. I'd subscribe to it. What could it have?

Let's see:

News
Stats (like how many new members, posts, etc.)
Comps
A quiz/question (something fun like that)
Updates

That's all I can think of.

If you were going to email "omg did u liek 4get us ?" then I would say please, please, PLEASE limit it to once a month MAX. And also leave a note that it will only send once per month, or you can "click this link to disable this email".

Other wise you can have an email that sends out to particular users if they've been gone for longer then 1.5-2.5 months.

I find email advertising phenomenally annoying. I can't believe that somehow, someone in California got my email address (I live in Australia and I never ever give out my email publicly) and keeps spamming me to buy Viagra for "reely cheep pricez!" from _____ store.
I have it blocked so it doesn't really matter, but the point is whenever I get emails that are "OH HI!! COME HEA AND CHECK OUT THIS SIET!!!1" I tend to immediately delete it, block it, and then on some really fucking annoying accounts threaten to "track [their] IP address and report it for harassment!" (Which actually worked, believe it or not).

Summary: emails not nice unless sent SPARINGLY (not every fucking day like above mentioned bots :dragon_angry:)

I don't really think there's anything for you to write about, except maybe upcoming competitions, updates, and, um.. technical stuff? I'd still like to get a Newsletter though  :dragon_bouncy:

I've seen something similar to a newsletter on the Yahoo groups board and the Meetup board I'm part of. I can tell you from experience it works really well and lets members see what's new and reply directly to the post. My one concern here is most of the ones I've seen let you reply using e-mail so would probably need some way to screen replies using that system to keep out spammers and such. I would subscribe to a newsletter and think it's a great idea!

Sel knows my thoughts on this from a while back when I had to send out the message about the art contest.  I love the idea of a news letter, maybe once a month or once a quarter (I think we'd have more news that way) to cover some up coming events as well as showing past ones and a few fun things too and maybe the current group project being worked on.

Finding  stuff to put in isn't a problem.  We could fill it with enough crap to make it weekly.  But limiting us to monthly quality newsletter will help us filter out the crap.
