Gallery copy protection
« on: December 07, 2003, 07:32:41 AM »

Is there any way to copy protect the images uploaded to the galleries?

I've taken measures to reduce the chances of people copying pictures off of my website without asking, so it kind of bothers me a little to post them in other galleries where anyone can just download them and do with them what thay will.  (I know my copy protection measures aren't foolproff, but it's better than nothing)

In fact there have been a couple of times when I've seriously considered deleting my pictures from all galleries but my own for just that reason.

I'm curious how copy protection works on a websites.  I checked and the right click deny seems a step in the right direction, although quickly circumvented.  But without going to a tighter format, like flash or something, once the html is on a person's computer they have a copy of all of the stuff.

My site has more than just right lick turned off.  You can't select anything.  Left click highlighting to selects and copy won't work, using the "select all" function in the edit section of the tool bar won't work, and neither will keyboard shrt cuts like "ctrl A"  It's accomplished by a couple of different java scripts.

Like I said it isn't foolproof, and serious thieves will always be able to find a work around, but it's a start and they can't say they didn't know they weren't allowed to just grab the pictures.  Plus it puts me in a better position, leagally, if I ever have totry and fight someone over copyright infringment because I have taken steps to copy protect my website.

Actually, it's pretty darn easy to get around those. Just go to View > View Source (in IE) and if you know some basic HTML, the file is all yours.

:nods

I know they don't work to well so that is why I haven't put anything in place nor was there any requests for such a feature. I'll need to see if I can activate it per gallery. If you could PM me a copy of the java script you are using and I'll see if I can get it added to your gallery.

I guess it is a problem in general with things you want to show someone over the internet.  Since it has to be sent to the person's computer, they have the information in some form.  I found just the file->save as works well on pretty much all sites.

I talked to a few people, and if you want to be more secure, try putting your images into a flash file/program, which I guess makes it really hard to get.  It seems the gallery supports them too, the only problem is you loose the preview.  If you want to get fancy, you could over come this by having them all in one flash that has its own preview/viewing menus etc.  With only one file in the gallery, there wouldn't be much need for a preview.

There's print screen as well, if you can be bothered cropping and resizing whatever it is you're "stealing"...

As I said earlier, I *know* there are ways around pretty much any type of copy protection.  I'm not foolish enough to think there isn't, and I don't understand why everyone thinks they need to point out all of the different ways around it.

However,  making the effort puts me in a better position, leagally, if I ever have to try and fight someone over copyright infringment because they can't say they didn't know my stuff wasn't free for the swiping.

Just forget I even brought it up... sheesh!
