I'm keeping an eye out
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:48:47 PM »

As Draconity.org continues to increase in size, and as the current mods and admins get more occupied with other things in life, it's important to consider new members into the Draconity.org staff.  I try to keep an eye out for promising, moral members and come to them with the opportunity, but 1) I haven't been in the forums much at all (jsut the IRC, as usual), and 2) Why should it be from my view - the view of the majority members would probably be more important.

I'm not going to hold any election or the such (unless everyone thinks that's a great idea), but I would like everyone who reads this to consider the oportunity.  Would you like to be a mod or even an admin of Draconity.org?  Do you think you would be good at it?  I personally believe most people's answers would be wrong, but some may be correct.

We are one of the largest dragonkin, and maybe even otherkin, websites around.  If you really are experienced and interested in this community, why not take a stance to further it?  It's not nearly as unrealistic as some people think to influence an entire community.  You don't even have to be a mod or an admin to take the initiative with an idea or ask around, or start something within the community.

The website's still being upgraded, and we really do need people's inputs.  We need developers, as mentioned before - that could be YOUR artwork or your creation already getting 100+ hits a day with many active members.  And even if you do need permission for something, it's not like your idea's going to be instantly rejected.  Even money isn't much of a problem - I try to set aside $50 a month just for Draconity.org to do.... whatever.  Buy server space, software, rewards for contests, or anything.

So, I ask everyone to step back, and ask themselves if they want to actively help the community (be it Draconity.org or otherkin/therian communities).  If so, then I hope you can realize the opportunities that await if one takes the initiative.

I think there are a good number of people who would petition to be a mod/admin, but like you said, most of them wouldn't make the cut.  As for myself?  I've been a member of DR for eight months, and a member here for three.  I will freely admit that I'm still learning a lot about the different communities.  I would love to do something more than just post my thoughts, but it's your decision.

I already know I won't make the cut for moderator/administrator, I don't know web coding and I have annoyed others every now and then, then there's the extra responsibility involved in moderating forums.

I'd pick Nezdragon, he's usually on top of a lot of things, Ria might be good too, same with J-Karrah.

I view being a moderator as a love/hate type position. On one hand you are a contributor to the community and help make things happen. On the other side some times you can't be every body's best friend and have to draw the line some where. I wouldn't know who to pick for a moderator or even an administrator for that matter since I have only been part of the community for a couple months and only just begun to understand the people. Would I love to help out in such a way? Yes, of course; but I believe I'm too 'green' for the job.

Me, I've "gotten off topic" in posts on accident and I haven't been around all so much, even though I try to be active.

I might be interested, but also I have the thought that I won't perform as well as I would hope to.

I'm actually a Global Moderator in another forum I'm in, but things are going slow. I'll be happy to take the position here as I do there if you consider.

Personally, I've been an admin and mod before on another unrelated forum, but I feel I tend to get off topic too much to be of use. Also, I haven't been here very long, and I think there are several, much more qualified members here that would do a better job. Shimi, Nez, Shiari, and Baph would all make excellent staff members.

Maybe being a mod would be some incentive to keep on track :drag_geek:

I agree that there are plenty of older members around who would make perfect staff members, but a lot of new members are very active. I wouldn't see it as a bad thing if a newer member was elected a moderator; it would just be more of a learning experience as opposed to a more experienced board member.

I certainly appreciate everyone's interest, and especially everyone's honesty.  There may be some changes made soon, but first I have a bit of work to do myself.

I've been wondering what our admins have been up to lately.  A severe case of real life?  :drag_hyper:

I wonder what a computer science and mathematics graduate who is currently working in music and thinks he's a dragon yet is an involved Christian can do?  Besides drive a few people nuts that is?

Hey you've found out what MY big religious plan is for humanity!  :drag_devious:
I've certainly got money, but I'm not sure how I would get away with using it on anything online without invoking Dad's "perturbed hawk" look. Y'know, that look that some men get when they're beginning to consider slashing your throat. Doesn't scare me or anything, but it's easy enough to translate as a loud screaming "ABSOLUTELY NOT!!". It's not really about you all being literal monsters or anything as much as it is about you all being people I'm talking to online, and Dad gets paranoid over anything Internet-related. Of course he just worries to much about life in general...  :drag_blah:

Also, even if I had the skills to moderate the board I'm not sure of my parent's reactions if I became a staff member on a Dragon forum, I know they'll only be more concerned if I do get any such position.

I do not think I would be a good choice. While being in a position of authority upon a board has a tendency to cause me to tone down my own posting vehemence, there have been too many topics posted here that get me riled beyond belief. With mod powers I might be seriously tempted to delete entire threads, and that would not be good for this board.

I think giving someone moderatorship involves alot of trust.

Someone who is around alot, who is willing to read through posts and if needed, settle the situation in the best possible way.

Someone who is unbiased, who is willing to refrain from taking sides even if it means holding back their own biases.

Someone who won't make irrational decisions, and someone who is not heavy handed as that only creates more tension in a community.

However, no one is perfect. The best one for the job is someone who will do the best that they can.

As for me...

I can do my best to describe myself, but there would still be bias. Rather, what traits am I showing? What are my pros and cons?

Also, if I personally see someone more qualified to be a moderator, I'll probably mention their name.
