So there it is! The next Draconity.org contest!! At least, it should be in the above post as an attachment. It's done in Macromedia Flash 8, so please make sure you the
plugin necessary to use it. I programmed it from scratch, and while I worked out all the bugs I found, I can't guarantee there aren't any. Hopefully it is simple and intuitive. However, it is intentionally limiting in some ways. If you find a bug, have a simple suggestion, or just can't get it to work at all, please feel free to bring it up in the forums where I will offer support.
Anyway, here's the deal. You have to draw a creature of your choosing in this Flash applet. If you haven't clicked all over it yet, please do so. When you do that, you should see triangles being built at the points you click. Click on an empty space or circle to “lock†it as a corner of a new triangle. Drag a corner to reshape it, or drag the entire triangle to move it, which also “unlocks†any currently locked circles. Change the color and transparency with the sliders at the bottom. You can also control which triangle appears on top of another with the “Move up†and “Move Down†buttons (it may take multiple clicks for complex stacks). The only function of the keyboard is the arrow keys that control the position of the canvas. There is also a saving and loading feature demonstrated below.
sample.txt attached above is a sample drawing. It's a bunch of commas and numbers and such that contains all the information of your drawing. If you paste the text into the textbox at the bottom right and click “loadâ€Â, the program will re-draw the sample drawing I made. When you click the save button, the text that makes up your drawing is shown in the text box and automatically copied to your computer's clipboard (memory for Cut, Copy, and Paste commands). After clicking the save button, you can open Notepad or any word-processor, paste the text in your computer's memory, and save it as a file to send as a entry or just to save your progress for later! I'd be happy to address any difficulties or questions in the forums.
Contest rules:
Like the last contest, there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. You can submit any number of entries at any time before 11:59pm EST of April 30th.. But please be reasonable, and focus on quality rather than quantity. After the deadline, the final judging will take place and the results will be announced shortly afterwards. A gallery will then be made with all the entries, but everyone's entry will remain anonymous. If you wish, you can post a comment in the gallery with your image to identify yourself as the artist of that image. You can also request a copy for your own purposes.
Judging will be on a rank basis. An entry will not be given a score, but rather be placed in 3 different lists from best to worst, each list for each admin (the judges). The lists are summed together for a final list that determines the prize places for the top 3 entries, and any ties in this area are disputed amongst the admins.
The administrators will be looking for two primary things. One is artistic ability, which I describe as the ability to accurately inspire a mental image. The other is complexity, which is largely based on triangle count, color diversity, and detailing. However, effects like 3-Dimensional, stained-glass, shadows, or other creative effects can play a rather large roll that enhances both of these.
You must be a member of Draconity.org to submit an entry. Please include your username in your entry email. You can choose to include a short description in your email, but it is not needed and should not improve your chances. Selroth will keep track of what image belongs to who, but when passed to the other administrators for judging, your username will be omitted to help discourage any bias.
There is an applet posted here and one on my personal server
here. The project source files will be available after the contest for free use.
