Why are you here?!
« on: January 19, 2007, 08:40:39 AM »

Heehee.  Now that I got your attention, lemme rephrase the question:
For what reason do you come to Draconity.org?  What do you enjoy the most about it?  Why did you go through the (small, but existent) effort to put in an application and come to the site?

I originally came to the site for Social reasons: Desren (formerly known as Naya at the time) invited me to the site from Draconic.net.  I wasn't too big on forums, but I found it comfortable here and stayed around.  It wasn't too long until T-Sar-Goth became fond of me and made me an assistant admin with Desren.

After that, my main reason to come to the site probably shifted to Benevolence.  I liked being an admin and doing whatever to help people, even if it wasn't much at the time.  I was still enjoying the Social aspect of the site as well, but becoming an admin may have more than doubled my interest in the site.

It in fact went back to Social as I focused more on a few close friends in the IRC rather than the administration aspect.  These friends changed my life around and literally made a world of difference in my life.  Not because they tried, but because of the type of people they are.

With my life radically changed from a rather dark depression, I pursued other opportunities in my life.  After a few months, I decided to join the Air Force and resign as admin of the site, thinking I probably wouldn't come back.  I was wrong, heh.  I missed the site terribly, and eagerly came back.

However, whether it be the time apart or the new life I've discovered, I couldn't regain the Social reasons for being at the site.  But, the fact that this website was where I met some very important friends and went through a very critical stage in my life, I picked up administration again gearing towards providing a place for the same... "miracle" to happen to others.  So I'd say Social went down, but Benevolence stayed.

Today, I think most people don't need that same miracle to happen, and this isn't a self-help website anyway.  It's more of a hobby of mine where I get simple pleasures from helping others.  It's a side-dish on a now very productive lifestyle I live.  Not to de-mean the site at all, as that's certainly not the case.  I enjoy it as a hobby, and I also see it as an opportunity for me to learn how to administrate better and use the experience to better my own life.  So I guess now it's a mix of Benevolence and Knowledge.

Benevolence.

Even though, not sure if the term is right to be applied.
I believe that i have to sustain the general community someway.
Not talking about draconomicon or specific ones, but draconity in general.

I voted other because my answer is a mix of the reasons mentioned in the poll. I like talking with people, and to my friends. Then, I am here because there are other Otherkins with whom I can talk about spirituality. And, as a member of the comminuty, there is always something I can do to help others, or simply share cool things with them.

Hard to pin down one specific reason.  There is an aspect of all available choices.  How about "all of the above"

My main reason for applying was out of a desperate social need. I knew what I had to do to come to terms with myself and my beliefs. I knew it was the only way to fully understand not only myself, but the entire draconic phenomena.

Since then it has grown into something much more spectacular. I met some of the best friends of my entire life. It helped me be more social, and to have a better self image of myself, which in turn reflects on how others see me. I help people with their lives where I can and lend an ear to those who need it. I learn more about the different views of the world, which in turn has helped me better form my own and become happy with my life. It helped me develop the confidence to do well in my life not only in my scientific career, but also in my art which is quickly forming into an incredible method to express my feelings and my personality -- to reflect who I am.

I guess if you were to ask me why I am still here, it's a combination of all the above factors and more.

Interesting question. :drag_think:

At first it was looking for information.  Though with the way you ask the question, I think the other reasons are there too.  Before I joined I was quite isolated in that there were few people I was connected to that shared my interests and weren't busy.  So I think my social needs weren't being met.  And discussing things may have a therapeutic effect along with sharing knowledge.

So, it may be something similar to what Shimdrashula has said.

I came for information... to see what a bunch of people talking[/i] with each other had to say about draconity, rather than just reading FAQs again. I intended to generally lurk and see what was being said. ((Thus the low post count.))

Lately I've been wanting to get into talking about stuff in my, and talking with other people, more than I usually do. So I figured I'd try to stop lurking in multiple aspects of life.

A mix of the first three options as of now.

Initially I came as a result of Dragon Realms being down but now I have well more reason to stay. And of course I'm banned from Dragon Realms and Silver Dragon Breath is blocked so this is currently my only big connection to the Dragon community.

Well its simple...all of the above!  I mean I think a forum like this is a great way to meet new friends who have very similar beliefs that you do.  People who understand you!  As well it is great to discuss the spritiuallity and complexity of our draconity with others, and freely as well.  I mean who would walk up to their good friend and say "hey man, I need to discuss something about my draconity." XD  And as well it is great to teach others what you have learned.  We were all once imature dragons back in the day learning who we were and why and stuff.  Its great to be here with other dragons like myself.  It brings a small community close together ^^
