New Logo vs Old

No one like it? I send one in .png, but that does't work. Another in .gif, but i know, the quality is poor. And .jpeg, I know I repeat but..., jpeg have no transparency. I have working 3 days to do it and... It is ok if you dislike it, but  give some respect to my work please. It is the first logo I made, and i am very impress of it.

If gif gives you enough transparency options, then you can use png and have it work in IE.  Just make sure it is PNG-24, and that the alpha is 100% solid for everything you want to show, since IE will display anything with partial transparency as fully transparent.

In the end though, this might be an important lesson.  Effective logo design can be rather different than most other art that a lot of the artists around here are experienced with, which is often why there are whole separate programs for design students than art students (with much overlap).  Logos often require simplicity and communication to take precedence over detail, style, and other art factors.

The first I made was in the best quality i can made for web with Photoshop. "PNG-24" Was my first choice, but I save it in PNG-8 too for better speed to download. The administrator have the choice, but he tell me it only work in .GIF. I save it in the best quality .GIF like what he need. You understand now?

The reason we can't go .jpg is because .jpg doesn't have transparency.

Ahhh, I didn't think about the need for a transparency.  But again, if the flames were behind the letters instead of on top of them, then the text would not be obscured.

No one is disrespecting your work, BDM, and we all appreciate the time and effort spent on it.   :)   But as Atomic mentioned, designing logos can be difficult, especially ones that have to look good across a wide range of "themes."  And I'll be honest, that is one reason I don't do them.

However, we were asked for our opinions.  Which would you prefer we give: meaningless rounds of "Oh, it's okay" or an honest opinion?

Hey big guy, none of us were trying to step on your toes. We all agreed that it is good work, you did a great job on it, and it does look good, we were just asked our oppinion on how it looked, and we gave it. I guess it does kind of look like we are picking it appart and I applogise for that, i know none of us ment it meanly or anything. We were just saying how we felt about it. In life, you might notice that some people will rip your art to pieces and spit on the ashes big guy. But some of the reasoning for this is jelousy, I am not sure if anyone feels that way, but it happens. People get jelouse because they dont have that kind of artistic talent, so even if they like some things about it, they will always pick it apart. Just take the oppinions with a grain of salt, and move on, they cant hurt you unless you let them. Just remember, opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one. But yes, we were just offering our honest oppinions, and didnt mean any harm with it ^^ *hugs* keep goin with your art big guy, you have a real talent.

I also liked the original logo better for reasons others have also mentioned.  that being said ...

I'll agree with JKarrah here.  You certainly are a lot better artist than I am.  There is a lot that goes into designing a logo though.  (Just like there is a lot that goes into producing a music CD.  First you have to write the music, then fix it up, then put together the CD, and then ... you have to figure out how to sell it!  :drag_blah: )

Oops, sorry for my tangent.  :drag_blush: Anyway, keep working at it!  It would have been a lot easier to not make your offer and then get no criticism, but by working on this you have a great opportunity to learn.

I will ask Sel which version he used.  IE is much worse with PNG8 than PNG24, so that might be a source of issues using png too.

I also agree that flames behind the letters would be better, as it would make the letters have both a more consistent foreground and background color, increasing legibility by a lot.  The letters can maintain flame shapes, trimmed downed from the current ones, but the coloring should be more consistent.

Or if you want the color gradient it currently has, add a background instead of transparency right next to the letters so there is more contrast.  Like maybe a dark background, but with a reflection of the flames off a small bit of ground or something, so there is dark background against the light tops and a light background against the dark bottoms.

I would have fiddled with the formats and such by now instead of complaining a lot, but all of my art software is on my desktop and I will be away from home until January.  So someone else might pick up on what I am saying before then, otherwise, I will see what I can do with it.

Mmm... if not enough colors, you can splice the gif horizontally. Though it probably would require changes to the templates too.

I like old one because the dragon was yawning, which means it is home, where one feels calm and relaxed :)

It's a pity that your design options are limited by the broken nature of the most popular web browsers.  However, I have a possible alternative.  Find exactly where the logo falls against the background.  Bruteforce the whole thing by putting that as the background, and then save as a JPEG.  The quality will be preserved, it'll look nice, and you wouldn't have to worry about transparency at all.

The only thing I could think of a problem with it is if you have the backgrounds on the site vary due to optional themes.  However, you could just create a new logo for each theme.  Just an idea.

Logos are hard! I've spent the last 2 years trying to redesign one for a conference that I work with so I understand how hard it can be. The art is good, it may just not fit quite right with the group. It does seem a bit angry, whereas the old one always seemed more relaxed. And is certainly a change from the old logo and it might just take some time to get used to the difference.

The first time my conference changed the logo it got alot of complaints, but we just took the complaints and used the comments to make some good changes. Logos are always a work in progress.
