Tell us about how you use Draconomicon! Please?
« on: October 12, 2006, 08:30:52 AM »

In order to make this place better, we need to know what's used, and how it's used.  We need information, opinions, and suggestions.  Please, be honest; flattering us will do no good at all.

Here's what I'd like anyone who reads this to do.  I hope it's not asking too much of my fellow members.  But, tell us what you think of the site.  If you think anything should be changed, let us know.  If you think anything can be improved, like documentation or the website's visual looks, please let us know.  If you want to go the extra mile to help the community, see if you can think of an inspiring idea for the site.

If you'd like to say a bit more, I suggest you tell us what you think this site's mission is.  In your eyes, how does this website service users?  Is it more a home for dragonkin, or a resource to discover draconity?  Does it have much to do with draconity at all?  I'm here for you, I'd like to be a part of what you want.

If you really feel like some vigorous posting, then let us know in a bit more detail how you use the website.  What features do you use?  Do you use the forums?  IRC?  Journals?  Here's a list of some of the features Draconomicon has:

Forums
IRC (real-time chatroom)
Email
Gallery to upload your artwork
Journal/Diary system
Wiki for research, and personal contribution of info on dragons and draconity
And little things like a user map, calendar, links and reviews.

I'll make the first reply :)

Personally I love this site.  I've been seperated from it too many times as I went through boot camp and almost a year of tech school.  I was surprised at how much I missed it, and how much of a home it actually was to me.  I also like the oportunity to improve on the site and make it a special community of otherkin... if I could get off my lazy ass and do some work for it!  LOL.

The biggest thing I dislike about the site is the name.  I didn't like the sound of it to start with, and it got worse as the name and slogan was being misleading, and how it ties into the D&D stuff.  I think it's a powerful image, of the wrong kind.  I also kinda think it's not very visually impressive.  I mean, it works, but it's nothing to brag about.  I like websites that catch the eye and don't look so... put together out of scraps (both in visual theme and plug-in modules).  What I love about the site is... well, there's a spark in it.  There's a few members who I really respect, and a lot of them don't even know it.  I find a superior level of maturity in those people, and open-mindedness.  They often get cloaked with new people often finding this website isn't for them or such.  But I think there is some serious potential to have a truly wonderful and powerful community.

I think a great idea for the site is a unique member archetecture.  The "sponsor system" as I've called it in the past.  It was an idea to encourage members to get closer together and make friends.  Though, I don't think it'd work out as planned and it would be difficult to implement, as well as scare away too many people.  That kinda thing is maybe best left to happen on its own.

OK, for a REAL idea, I want personal profiles for everyone.  Kinda like Draconic's find-a-dragon, kinda like myspace.  Not really for a blog/journal purpose (though it'd be easy enough to combine it there), but because a lot of us like telling other people about ourselves.  They like to say what kind of dragon they are and describe it.  They like to talk about how they discovered their draconity or came across it.  It'd be a nice place to give a bit of history on yourself, or summary of a past life.  Maybe after having this... introduction to yourself, new friends will find you.  Maybe you'll curiously browse around to see the profiles of other members on this site and start a friendship with someone who interests you.

Anyway, I'm always on the IRC whenever I'm online.  That is DEFINITELY my home; it's my special place accessible from all over the world.  I learn people's names, who they are, and talk as much as I can on there.  I love it.  It's also the perfect place to be who I really am at heart, even if that's best represented as a silly lil' dragon.  The email is my main email account, lasting longer than all others, and used the most.  It has yet to disappoint me; it works wonderfully in all the email clients I've tried, to include the web-client here on the site.  I can send and receive larger files than what other email services allow, especially for being free.  It's also a subtle hint to my draconity for close friends or online buddies.  It automatically gets checked by thunderbird every 5 minutes.

I have the main page set as my home page, so I visit it several times a day.  I look through the forum box on that page to see if there's anything interesting.  I sometimes check to see how the main poll is doing.  And if I'm interested, I swing by the forums and glance over a few things, and actually fully read the topics that interest me.  When someone mentions another feature like the wiki or gallery, I swing by it to take a look and see if I've missed anything else interesting.

Well, to answer the question of the poll in my own, as-only-I-can-complicate-it kind of way: right now, I type in the address manually, but when I'm at school, it's a FireFox quick-link and I'm constantly on IRC.

I agree very strongly with both the name and the profile idea.  Other than that, I'm not really that creative when it comes to new ideas for forums, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help there. ^^;

I first came to Draconomicon before heading anywhere else. It seemed the least intimidating site with the friendliest community I could find. Using the high-tech world of internet communication, I quickly found a place to call home. With that said, it's good the registration system is a bit lax, or many people would be put off (like I am with DR right now), on the other hand it allows lots of wannabes and strangers in that cause problems. Despite the intrusion, I still think even they could learn from being community here. I myself know that I couldn't easily turn anyone away. I don't question the reasons of anyone who are here.

I have this place bookmarked as a favorite location. (I currently have Google as my homepage out of practicality, though I may change that soon.) The name of the site confused me a bit, as I thought it was a resource for what the online community considered dragons; the name doesn't explain what the site is primarily about.

The layout is simple, practical, though not the most elegant. I find it works just fine for me, though if you have the time a little facelift could go a long way. Personally I like some of the systems that other sites have (like DR). Having a small toolbar under your avatar with a custom title, catchphrase, age, gender, locality, etc., etc. .... that's really quite handy and a nice touch. It makes the site feel more personalized and expresses "you" on a more personal level.

I use IRC, Forums, the gallery, and the journals the most. I really have no need for the other stuff. I feel IRC should have more users, but I have no suggestions as to how to encourage this. In truth, the site's greatest weakness is lack of consistent, dedicated members. Though the registry is stacked full of names, most are not active, nor have they been sometimes for years. Some of the members who are here tend to begin no-where conversations or simply argue a point by repeating themselves over and over again. These aren't good for a communities' reputation, and I'm quickly discovering that Draconomicon is not favorably looked upon by some of the members of the DR IRC.

I also have a problem with the site's system from time to time. Including anything I enter in in the PostNuke profile becomes scrambled or erased, often replacing (') with ("). I also can't see my signature for whatever reason, among other things. In short, some bugs need to be ironed out.

My personal suggestion is that everyone get together and have a brainstorm (which is likely what this is.) There has to be a way we can compromise accessibility and eligibility. There has to be a way to make Draconomicon a more attractive place to visit, as well as more recognizable in the eyes of the online communities. I want options, a more organized layout, and a more active community. I think some work in that area could go a long way.

Edit: I changed this site to my homepage, since Google is accessible in numerous different ways.

Edit again: I really like the profile idea, Selroth. If we can be an international directory of dragonkin online, and not just of this forum community, we could have people flock here. In addition, it would give some purpose to the name Draconomicon, as it could be a resource much like a who's who book or encyclopedia. This could give the site a very unique purpose and advantage. I strongly encourage pursuing this.

Befor I came here I was at some other form called 'otherkins' that was when I first learned of the word, and what it ment to me. I joined their and made a 'hello' thread' but I didnt really feel welcome.
Then after going into the links and linking to differnt sites I ran into this one and felt welcome. (Shimdrashula is Very correct that its 'least intimidating site with the friendliest community I could find' ) Mostly I hung around the gallery and the open threads for a day or two then joined!
I dont use the IRC or the gallery, mainly (or only) because I have no clue how to use them or how to upload hehehe... Athough id like to.
The profile idea is a great one, Id like to talk to more dragon kin people on MSN, which is why I came here.
And no offence to who ever made that logo in the top left (On defalt skin) It sorta dos make me think D&D at first look. Like the DM books usaly have the old leather bound look, with steel corners and stuff on the cover. Its a good idea if you want to pull some D&Ders in and change their look on things, buut then again...
I Have this place bookmarked under my forms area, and I look at it... around once every 2 hours.
And iv never used the Diary, though I problaly should. And iv dropped into the wiki more then a few times.

I voted for hand-typed!  I like the exercise. ;)

I'm not very good when it comes to the creative, so having new ideas is unlikely, but I am good at hearing others' ideas and elaborating or offering my agreement/disagreements, and the reason I feel such.

Since I just read this, I don't have much to offer right now ... I really just posted as a bump to those that may have looked at this thread and moved on ... sort of a reminder for the next time they find their way to the forums.

I am in agreement with much of what you originally posted Selroth.  Although I did visit a few of the other draconic sites early on, this is the only one I chose to join, and I still believe I made a good choice ... so I am very much interested in seeing improvements to this place.  I hope I can think of something more that I can offer, instead of leaving it all to you ... I'll have to give it some thought and post back later.

I have the site as a bokmark (*maybe I should make this my homepage...*) at home and at school, so I just log on and go at it:p

I think the site itself is great...no, AWESOME!  I check the forums every day I'm at school.

Here's a suggestion I think should be applied and enforced due to recent site activity. I've been thinking about it while reading some of the site's old posts and wondered how the site could possibly be as leniant on misbehavior as it is. (I know you want to be good guys, but maybe a little tough love now and again could preserve the site's quality.) Now, I've been in forums where members can get quite out of hand. Depending on the infraction, they may or may not get a warning before being temp-banned from the forums. The ban is normally for 3 days, and then they are free to return. In severe cases members are perma-banned, usually with stern warning.

I know it isn't pleasant to consider banning a member, but the threat of being locked out as well as maintaining a zero-tolerance policy on some issues could help curb more immature activity.

After an official warning, that is the usually policy that is used.  Temp bans are used for 3-5 days, and depending on the nature of the offense it is used once or several times before considering a perm ban.  These policies are used, but usually after much discussion among admins and some restraint.

I check the forum  generally once or twice a day and have the forum index page bookmarked.    As much as I would like to use the chat functions I simply don't have time.  As for the other functions of the site, I already have a Livejournal that I don't update nearly as often as I should so I don't have need of the journal, I have my own email addresses for public and private use so I don't need that from the forum, and I didn't know about the Wiki (but will have to check it out one day soon).

If you really feel like some vigorous posting, then let us know in a bit more detail how you use the website.  What features do you use?  Do you use the forums?  IRC?  Journals?  Here's a list of some of the features Draconomicon has:

Forums - That's what I see this site as; it's in my Bookmarks Folder under "Forums" and close to the top. But the thing with me and Forums is that I come and go from them (like up until now).

IRC (real-time chatroom) - I think I outgrew chatrooms when I graduated high school. Nothing personal, I just don't feel the need to actively seek it out.

Email - ugh. I have too many email addresses as it is, sorry. :P

Gallery to upload your artwork - I have my own site, and I haven't found the existing gallery setup inviting enough to want to browse.

That, and the majority of the membership isn't terribly artistically inclined, judging from the amount of avatars that belong to Somebody Else. I could be wrong about this, however.

Journal/Diary system
- this I'm kind of interested in, but I barely use the other blogs that I have. I need some discipline.

Wiki for research, and personal contribution of info on dragons and draconity - I should be using/adding to this, but I'm not sure what to add. Not something that I would use a lot, but I should help maintain it or something.

And little things like a user map, calendar, links and reviews - I'm on the map, the main thing on the calendar that I know of is birthdays and major holidays. Haven't seen (m)any reviews.

I like this site a lot, I think that a potential user can learn a lot about drconity and being Otherkin in general, as the community here is very helpful. But primarily and almost exclusively, I see it as a bulletin board.

Hope that helped.

EDIT: Now that I actually read the other posts, I think that a myspaceish thing would be a terriffic idea; don't look to me for help with implementing it, but I'll help you make it pretty.

I wouldn't mind talking real-time with the other members (as IRC seems to be the weapon of choice) but I'm just  not sure if I'd stay into it. I prefer the "fire-and-forget" style of bbs posting, especially with the automatic notifications. I check my email about 10 times a day, and I usually respond quickly to bbs notifcations.
